Job Summary Reporting to the GALCIT Research Lab Manager, will provide technical expertise for ongoing research projects, outside testing projects and technical assistance to undergraduate and graduate lab activities. Will assist the manager with overseeing facility operations.
Job Duties - Operate and maintain the CAST research facilities: assembly lab, real weather wind tunnel, aerodrome camera tracking system and shop equipment. - Provide technical assistance to CAST researchers and students. - Develop priorities and sets goals for research projects, lab activities and CAST operations' tasks, and develop effective actions plans for their achievement. - Provide input to the Research Lab Manager to ensure timely procurement and maintenance of CAST tools supplies necessary for research projects. - Create standard operating procedures for CAST research equipment, safety procedures and CAST facility operations. - Responsible for monitoring and enforcing research safety procedures in the Center and training new researchers, postdocs and students. - Responds to CAST faculty and research personnel to schedule time in the center facilities. - Responsible for maintaining the CAST facility, ensuring that the physical plant is in good working order. Responsible for submitting facility work orders when facility maintenance issues arise in the facility or obtaining cost estimates for submission to the Research Lab Manager for review. - Monitor facility security standards and make recommendations to the Research Lab Manager in order to maintain optimal security conditions. - With the Research Lab Manager, develop an emergency plan for enacting in the case of fire, earthquake, lock-down or other emergencies. - Communicate effectively with supervisor, research personnel and Caltech employees. - Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications - HS Diploma - 10 years of experience in maintaining and flying model aircraft - Knowledge of flight controllers and radio-control flight dynamics - Demonstrated ability and inclination for mechanical systems - Evidence of oral and written communication and organizational skills - Demonstrated ability in problem solving and in debugging complex mechanical and electrical systems - Experience working with autonomous systems
