Job Code: 4383 Job Grade: K The office of Safety & Emergency Management at the Stanford School of Medicine seeks a knowledgeable and proven Health and Safety Manager who can perform the most complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements. The role will manage EHS programs and advocate for regulatory compliance practices to achieve program excellence and continuous improvement. Success is measured through the integration of program goals into standard work practices in alignment with business goals and values.
Build environmental, health, and safety program elements to enhance compliance and auditing within laboratory, facility, and loading dock areas with a focus on OSHA and EPA policies, NIH biosafety guidelines, as well as Stanford University guidelines. Specifically, to work closely with clients to ensure compliant practices and respond timely to client inquires. Coach leaders to be visible EHS advocates.
Partner with University and regulatory subject matter experts on compliance issues and inspections and to ensure alignment with local policies and best practices.
Lead teams in understanding local and regional long-term compliance practices and implementing new program developments.
Apply advanced knowledge and forward thinking practices to act on regulation changes and meet regulatory timelines.
Complete regulatory submissions.
Perform internal audits to monitor program effectiveness and external government inspections, compliance follow-up, and reporting.
Deliver accurate documentation and provide clear weekly communications with clients, team members, regulators and/or other stakeholders, which can be in the form of small and large group presentations, complex reports, spreadsheets, webinars, and webpage content. Work with a complex database to develop tools, which align internal inspection procedures and regulatory codes. Develop dashboard reporting for management roll-up.
Work with facilities operations, laboratory operations staff, and departmental management on resolving safety and environmental issues expeditiously and compliance challenges are fully remediated.
For assigned locations, respond expeditiously to accidents, injuries, illnesses, odor complaints, and hazardous materials spills and investigate mold and asbestos incidences including partnering with University subject matter experts and facilities operations for remediation. Prepare accident reports and communicate with affected employees and managers within assigned locations. Perform risk assessments and report results to clients and management.
Provide guidance and safety training to facility, staff, and students to ensure understanding of compliance expectations and best practices. Training methodologies include webinars, classroom sessions, direct interactions, and web-based assignments.
Ensure the safe evacuation of personnel in assigned buildings.
Work with design teams to ensure safety and environmental compliance in renovations and build projects. Ensure best practices, University guidelines, and regulations are followed for securing equipment, hazardous materials storage and use, environmental processes, machine guarding, signage, etc. Apply advanced safety knowledge and innovative thinking to fold in new technologies and methodologies in lab research.
Provide website and mobile application support by developing and monitoring content and ensuring timely and accurate content is available to clients.
Ensure timely and thorough delivery of work assignments. Prioritize and verify work project completions, incorporating LEAN practices to improve efficiency and expectations. Lead by example the use of personal protective equipment, safety awareness, and demonstrate strong behavioral competencies.

A basic understanding of chemistry and biology, specifically in areas relating to medical research and biotechnology. Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of occupational environmental health and safety with preferably a master's degree and professional certification in the EHS field.
Must be able to independently problem-solve solutions to a wide range of circumstances in a complex organization.
Ability to exercise tack and have superior diplomatic and inter-personal skills. Highly organized and detail oriented. Knowledge of computer systems, applications, and web page management.
People management experience of 3 - 5 years.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven to ten years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
Demonstrated supervisory/coaching expertise.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
None required. Preferred:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP), or other relevant professional certification.
People management experience of 3 - 5 years.
Lean training and/or certification.
Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.
