Description of Key Responsibility:
Area Hall Director 1.As a means of supporting student persistence, create a community living environment that fosters academic success, respect, support, and positive human interaction. Know residents individually and intentionally maximize those relationships to support student success in the living-learning environment. Further, assist students who are experiencing personal difficulties through consultation and/or referral to other resources.
2.Supervise Resident Assistants. Participate in their selection, provide appropriate training, schedule and assign their work, monitor and evaluate their performance, and make corrective and/or disciplinary interventions as necessary. Monitor and assist resident assistants in planning and conducting programs. Manage and account for funds allocated for residential programming.
3.Attend Residence Life staff meetings and facilitate meetings involving Resident Assistants. Serve on committees and participate in meetings in a variety of settings. Represent the College, the department, and the interests of residential students in particular, by participating in meetings of municipal, civic and professional organizations.
4.Be available to assist students and families at all times, participate in a 24-hour duty rotation schedule with other hall directors to include weekdays, weekends, and holidays throughout the calendar year. Respond to unexpected situations such as disputes between students, violations of College policies by students, medical and other emergencies. In cases of illness or injury, ensure that established procedures are followed and that students, or others, receive appropriate care.
5.Intervene in and document, when appropriate, student behavior which is inconsistent with College policy or disruptive to the campus community. Determine and implement corrective action, which may include mediation, counseling, and/or referral to the College’s student conduct process. Serve as Administrative Hearing Officer as part of the college student conduct process.
6.Facilitate check-in and check-out procedures at the beginning and end of each term. Maintain accurate records of keys and occupancy. Maintain control over issuing, replacement, and collection of room keys. Perform inspections and document condition of rooms, including determination of damage charges to be assessed.
7.Serve as a facility manager. Perform regular tours of residential facilities to account for furnishings, keys, equipment, safety hazards, maintenance and cleaning needs. Ensure that buildings and their contents are properly maintained, primarily by reporting deficiencies to maintenance and custodial personnel.
8.Assist with the operation of the Office of Residence Life by performing various administrative tasks and assisting students, and others, who visit or call the office. This may include the coordination of special departmental projects. Hold office hours at the Office of Residence Life as assigned by the Director of Residence Life, Associate Director or Assistant Director of Residence Life.
Student Involvement Coordinator 9.Coordinate the planning and implementation of a comprehensive and aggressive calendar of weekend programming that meets the social needs of a diverse student population, and which contributes to growth and development of students. Work closely with Residence Life, the College Union Activities Board, Ministry and Service, Center for Social Impact, Fine Arts, and Athletics to coordinate opportunities for student involvement.
10.Explore, create and execute new opportunities for active and passive engagement on the weekends. Serve as an advocate for students with regard to evening and weekend hours of operation for campus facilities.
11.Select, advise, and develop the College Union Activities Board (CUAB) and oversee the group's programs and events. Assist CUAB in leading the evening and weekend program initiative. Create a process for the selection, training and development of student leaders within CUAB. Work with the Director of Student Involvement to negotiate and process contracts for outside presenters and entertainers that address appropriate risk management issues.
12.Effectively communicate events to the campus community through innovative marketing strategies. Compile information from the web calendar, faculty departments, campus offices, and student organizations for a regular event newsletter, and supervise the marketing interns in this process. Ensure that applicable pages on both the College website and Cardinal Net are updated, accurate, and accessible. Supervise and evaluate Marketing Interns through the Office of Student Involvement.
13.Coordinate and market an incentive program for weekend event attendance. Collaborate with campus partners to identify rewards for regular attendance. Maintain a tracking system for event attendees.
14.Assist in the coordination of the planning and implementation of a comprehensive program of student activities during December Term, which meets the social needs of a diverse student population and which contributes to growth and development of students.
15.Assist Student Involvement staff with the execution of large-scale events and programs including Orientation, Family Weekend, Homecoming, Springfest, and other college-wide celebrations. Serve on campus-wide committees and participate in planning and conducting of other major campus events as directed.
16. Responsible for driving to special student events off campus.
17.Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
A Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree in student personnel/higher education or a related area from an accredited institution preferred.
At least one year of experience working with college students in a residential setting. Preferred experience would include management of a facility, supervising others, developing programs, and collaborating with professional or paraprofessionals on a variety of developmental programs. And/or at least one year of experience in student activities and/or an office environment particularly where dealing directly with students or the public is involved, is preferred. Experience in event planning and in working with diverse student population is preferred.
Licenses or Certifications:
A valid drivers license is required.
As a position that reports to two separate areas within Student Affairs, the aims of this position are twofold:
To ensure that students living in campus housing are able to enjoy and benefit from the residential experience by maintaining the physical and operational integrity of facilities, overseeing developmental programming, providing assistance to individuals experiencing personal and/or academic difficulties, and supervising the Resident Assistant staff. This staff member also serves on the 24/7 on-call duty rotation for Residence Life.
To direct and provide quality programs, events and activities for students with the goal of improving student retention and enriching the social and intellectual lives of students in a way that contributes to their personal development. To anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts, and maintain a nurturing and challenging environment for students' involvement.
