The Chief of Staff will report directly to the Executive Director of the Hormel Institute and will, eventually, have authority to make a majority of business-related decisions, in consultation with the executive director.
This position will directly supervise 1-2 leaders for each of the following 3 areas:
Research Support Services (IT/Helpdesk, Networking, Supercomputing, Library, Shared Equipment, Safety Training)
In each of the above areas, there are several indirect reports. The Chief of Staff will work with each supervisor to set goals, measure progress, and ensure accountability.
Under the leadership of the Executive Director and various resources including boards, internal and external stakeholders, and other University faculty and staff, the Chief of Staff will participate in future planning processes for the department. This position will help to manage and periodically reevaluate the strategic plan. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for promoting organizational culture and maintaining a healthy work environment, including the development of departmental best practices. This position will have various degrees of participation in operations, finance and accounting, recruitment, special projects, and other areas as needed.
Required BA/BS with at least 6 years of experience; may supervise a small homogeneous department or larger process-oriented area whose members perform like activities
Preferred Advanced degree in business, communication, or related field 4+ years of experience working in a research institution or other academic research environment 4+ years of executive or senior leadership Passion for supervision, mentorship, leadership, coaching, and development Experience with developing and managing budgets, and interpreting financial reports Exceptional verbal and written communication skills Ability to embrace and manage change during periods of growth and expansion
