Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division has an opening for a Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic. You are responsible for the Heating, Boilers, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) Technical Supervisor for the efficient performance of a wide range of service/installation- related HVAC/R activities. Representative duties include; Repairs, troubleshooting, installing, preventive maintenance, modify, fabricate and provide design consultation on the centrifugal, reciprocating, screw and magnetic chillers; packaged and split air conditioning; heat-pumps; economizers; environmental air conditioning; gas heating units; electrical troubleshooting of low and high-pressure boilers and humidifiers; DDC-BAS Control Systems, electronic and pneumatic controls; humidity control; VFDs; VAVs; clean rooms; laboratory exhaust and negative pressure systems; fume hoods; air and water balancing; environmental chambers; high/low temp walk-ins and reach-ins; ice machines; cascade multi-stage ultra-low freezers; refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment practices.
What You Will Do:
Comply with LBL implementation of DOE health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental protection policies.
Perform all work safely and be particularly aware of potentially hazardous operations or conditions.
Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property and notify the appropriate supervisor and, when appropriate, the building manager and when appropriate the Environmental Safety Hazards Control Department.
Report promptly and correct when appropriate any hazardous conditions that are discovered.
Proceed with work only after having ensured that appropriate safety procedures have been implemented.
Plan work with full consideration of safety.
Ensure that all unique activities that involve potentially hazardous conditions are carried out in conformance with a current Operational Safety Procedure (OSP) to ensure that risks are acceptable.
Keep operating and quality-assurance records, such as daily logbook and equipment entries.
Ensure that personal exposure to toxic chemicals, ionizing radiation, and contaminants is maintained within prescribed standards and is as low as reasonably achievable.
Minimize the volume and toxicity of all LBL-generated wastes and maintain chemical inventories as low as reasonably achievable.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Work with pipe systems and experimental equipment piping connections involving water, air, waste disposal, specialized liquids, and gases.
What Is Required:
Completion of a formal apprenticeship or technical training in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) technology, along with formal training in pneumatic / electronic /electrical controls, building automation systems, and refrigerant recovery equipment.
Experience independently troubleshooting, repairing, installing and preventive maintenance on HVAC/R equipment. Types of equipment and systems include; centrifugal, reciprocating, and screw chillers; packaged and split air conditioning; heat-pumps; economizers; environmental air conditioning; gas heating units; electrical troubleshooting of low and high-pressure boilers; DDC-BAS Control Systems, electronic and pneumatic controls; humidity control; VFDs; VAVs; clean rooms; laboratory exhaust and negative pressure systems; fume hoods; air and hydronic balancing; environmental chambers; high/low temp walk-ins and reach-ins; ice machines; cascade multi-stage ultra-low freezers; recovery/recycling equipment. Experience using a variety of craft techniques, including welding, brazing and pipe fitting.
Must be CFR certified as a universal technician by an EPA approved institute.
Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds; work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under fluorescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl; manual dexterity in both hands; able to lift 60 lbs. to chest height; distinguish colors and use color codes. Ability to communicate clearly over telephone and two-way radio. Must have a valid California Driver's license.
Knows and practices good safety habits, including knowledge of important MSDS, equipment safety, tool safety, and ladder safety guidelines.
Interest in maintaining personal HVAC/R skills through a combination of self-study, company training, manufacturer's workshops, and other professional development activities.
Ability to work under the pressure of time, adverse weather conditions, customer demands, and backlog constraints.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Knowledge of LBL facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing store issues, safety program, and facilities design requirements. All will be required after employment.
Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record-keeping and communication; ability to quickly write presentable reports and memoranda on computer.
