The Producer/Editor, reporting to the Executive Producer, is responsible for producing creative, high-quality video content to inform and inspire viewers and highlight the accomplishments of the University to the Boston University community and beyond. The Producer/Editor must possess the ability to direct a video program from the concept and design phase through final production.
This position requires a motivated, energetic, creative individual who will seek to push the envelope in terms of envisioning and creating innovative, high-quality video programs to reach an audience that ranges from current and prospective college, students, professors, staff, alumni, parents, and the general public. The Producer/Editor is responsible for producing, shooting, and editing video programs that will be distributed through various University communication channels including the daily news website BU Today, the University's BU.edu homepage, and the University's social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
B.A./B.S. or equivalent, in communications, television, or media.
Candidates should have 3-5 years of work experience and a minimum of three years of experience in web video production with a comprehensive understanding of the technical and creative aspects of the pre-production, production, and post-production processes.
Experience in web video production, with proficiency on the Avid editing platform and Canon cinema-style cameras.
To produce modern, relevant programming on the University's editorial and social channels, the position requires a continually up-to-date understanding of the social media landscape, and the ability to create a range of video content: documentary-style profiles, social videos, explainers, and research-based pieces.
Advanced editing experience with non-linear systems (such as Avid) is required.
Responsible for producing and editing one's projects.
Must be capable, professional and willing to go the extra mile to do exceptional work. May require work outside normal business hours. Occasional travel, as needed. Familiarity with basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, Filemaker for administrative work. Familiarity with broadcast cameras, VTRs, sound and lighting equipment. Knowledge of/practice in how to create a compelling story through the medium of video. Experience editing on non-linear edit systems (i.e. Avid) with After Effects and PhotoShop. Experience encoding a variety of file types (i.e. QuickTime, AVI, Real Player) through applications such as Sorenson Squeeze and Cleaner XL for posting videos to various campus servers. Progressively responsible experience in a professional video editing/producing environment demonstrating competence in all areas of video production.
Experience with professional video production procedures, practices, techniques, and terminology; studio production with multi-camera shooting; cinematography; principles of analog and digital video capture; professional television production equipment operation including video cameras and recorders, audio recording equipment, file compression, video switching, character generation, graphics manipulation, lighting, and post-production equipment; advanced computer operations; standard software applications and advanced Final Cut Studio and Adobe Creative Suite video editing software; proper handling and troubleshooting of broadcast-quality video production and post-production equipment; safety practices related to video production.
Skill and Ability to: Operate and maintain a variety of analog and digital video cameras and video editing equipment; operate computers and relevant systems and software; creatively plan and translate abstract concepts into effective visual form; work with other technical and non-technical staff to organize and implement videotaping of instructional or other educational-related projects; work with clients and talent to be comfortable in front of the camera; adapt video products to fit needs of clients and target audience; explain various principles of video to clients; develop and optimize workflow techniques to manage complex video projects effectively and efficiently; troubleshoot video product complications; research solutions and make technical decisions; communicate effectively with individuals and groups; write and speak clearly, concisely and effectively; meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities; research and remain current on the developments and applications of state of the art video production technology. Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
