Position Summary
At the Long Island State Veterans Home, the Biomedical Engineering Technician is a valuable member of our team who, under the guidance of the Senior Biomedical Engineering Technician, works to ensure that medical equipment is well maintained, safely functional and properly configured.
This is a per diem position with various hours, shifts and days.
Duties of a Biomedical Engineering Technician may include the following but are not limited to:
- Inspect, repair, calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on the facilities medical devices and equipment.
- Maintain and calibrate testing equipment in accordance with manufacture guidelines.
- Perform acceptance and quality assurance testing of medical devices according to protocols.
- Assist with isolating electronic and electromechanical medical equipment problems on-site and perform the necessary repair in an expedient manner.
- Assemble and install medical electronic or electromechanical devices.
- Perform prescribed electrical equipment safety test on a routine basis as assigned and on all required equipment prior to initial use and prior to utilization following service.
- Complete all documentation on a timely basis after repair or maintenance.
- Maintain information in the facilities BME equipment database.
- Participate in training programs as required by the facility.
- Assist with the evaluation of new products /services as required.
- Assist with clinical in-service education on correct utilization of medical devices.
- Participate in BME projects as assigned.
- Other hospital or BME technical duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Associate's Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related fields with minimum two (2) years of experience in the Biomedical engineering field. In Lieu of the Associate's Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, or related field, a minimum of 5 years' experience in the biomedical/electrical equipment repairs and Electrical Certifications. Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills. Experience in hospitals or Long Term Care Facilities.
Preferred Qualifications: BS in Biomedical Engineering or Electronics Technology.

Working Conditions:
Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

The Long Island State Veterans Home is a tobacco-free environment. Tobacco products are strictly prohibited anywhere on our 25-acre campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises.
This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
Essential Position: This position has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. This means that when the Long Island State Veterans Home is faced with an emergency, employees in such positions are required to remain at their work location or to report to work.
The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.
The use of Vacation or Personal Leave accruals during the first 6 months of employment will not be authorized unless prior approval has been granted by Human Resources.
The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department, clear a background investigation, submit three (3) written references, and provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s). Please be advised that failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) order that all hospitals and nursing homes "continuously require all covered personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19." Upon acceptance of a conditional job offer, candidates who are not already vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol, including booster vaccines. Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later. The regulation also includes those who may be affiliated with or interact with employees of a hospital or nursing home. The order allows for limited medical exemptions with reasonable accommodations, consistent with applicable law.
